Anwuliazuka first tried starting a band at 12. Men called the house replying to the "wanted" ad she took out in the local newspaper, behind her parents' backs, seeking a drummer, bassist, and lead guitarist. Her parents intercepted one of those calls and promptly exploded her plans. And so it went; and so it goes.
Anwuliazuka attempted to start her first band at 12, but when men responding to the ad she took out in the local paper called the house looking to audition, her parents shut it all down. But that did not stop her from playing with her youth orchestra at Carnegie Hall, first violin, or teaching herself guitar, reclaiming a love of keys, teaching herself bass, dabbling in harmonium and ukulele and anything else that said in sound what she struggled to convey in spoken words. She considers herself to be a collage artist since her toddling years, when she first learned to read and cut with child-sized scissors. Her songwriting process is equally freeform and fragmented, born from years of collecting scraps that later get reassembled into something. |
